Accessibility Statement

We build custom carved signs, and we want the website that sells them to work for everyone who visits it — including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, use magnification, or rely on high-contrast settings.

This page describes the standard we hold ourselves to, what we have actually done and tested, what we know is still imperfect, and how to reach a person if something on this site gets in your way.

The standard we use

We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, as our benchmark. These are the guidelines most accessibility law in the United States and internationally refers to.

Most of this website meets that standard. Where it does not, we have listed what we know about below. We would rather tell you plainly than claim perfection — a site this size is never finished, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing.

What we have done

In September of 2026 we rebuilt this storefront from the ground up on a modern, accessibility-focused theme, and worked through the site page by page. That work included:

  • Replacing pictures of text with real text, so it can be read by a screen reader, selected, copied, searched, and resized. Our paint colour chart in particular used to be more than thirty images of colour names and codes; every one of those is now readable text.
  • Correcting colour combinations that did not have enough contrast to be comfortably readable.
  • Fixing controls that could be reached with a keyboard but not actually operated with one.
  • Making sure that messages appearing on the page — errors, confirmations, cart updates — are announced to screen reader users rather than appearing silently.
  • Rewriting our terms, shipping and returns pages in plain language.
  • Reporting two accessibility defects we found in the underlying theme back to its maintainers, so other shops benefit from the fixes too.

How we test

Automated accessibility scanners are useful, but they only catch a fraction of real problems, so we do not rely on them alone. Our testing includes:

  • Listening to pages with the NVDA screen reader in Chrome on Windows, to hear how they are actually announced.
  • Navigating with the keyboard only — no mouse — to confirm every control can be both reached and operated, including with both the Enter and Spacebar keys.
  • Measuring colour contrast ratios rather than judging them by eye, against 4.5:1 for regular text and 3:1 for large text.
  • Viewing pages at 320 pixels wide, roughly the narrowest phone in common use, to check that nothing is cut off or requires scrolling sideways.
  • Running automated scans as a first pass, to catch what machines are good at catching.

We re-test when we make significant changes to the site.

What we know is still imperfect

  • Customer reviews. The review section on our product pages is supplied by a third-party service. We have corrected several colour values in it to meet contrast requirements, but parts of its behaviour are controlled by the vendor and we cannot change them directly. When we find problems there, we report them.
  • Our custom order form. The form for describing a custom sign is an embedded third-party form. If it does not work well for you, please email or write to us and we will take your details directly — see below.
  • Checkout. Once you proceed to payment, checkout is provided and controlled by Shopify, our ecommerce platform. We cannot modify those pages. If you have difficulty there, contact us and we will complete your order with you another way.
  • Older product photographs. We have added thousands of photographs over many years, and the quality of their written descriptions varies. Improving them is ongoing work.

If something does not work for you

Please tell us. We treat accessibility problems as defects, not suggestions.

It helps if you can tell us which page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what happened instead — but tell us in whatever way is easiest for you. We will respond within [X] business days, and we will tell you what we are doing about it and roughly when.

And if any part of this website gets in your way, you do not have to use it. Every sign we make involves a conversation with us anyway. Email or use our custom info form, and we will take your order personally, answer your questions, send you a proof for approval, and get your sign made — the same as we would for anyone standing in our shop.
